Frequently Asked Questions

How does acupuncture work?

Traditional Theory

The theory of traditional East Asian medicine is based on the idea that the body is traversed by meridians or channels through which energy (Qi) flows. Acupuncture points are specific areas located along these meridians that can be stimulated with needles, pressure, suction or heat to balance the flow of Qi in the body to restore and maintain health.

Modern Theory

From a biomedical perspective, acupuncture points have unique physical and biological properties that assist the body in self-regulating and healing when stimulated. They work to affect the local tissue to promote healing, stimulate the release of endogenous chemicals, increase blood flow and cardiac output, assist in brain rewiring and self-repair, modulate immune responses and reduce inflammation.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is a generally safe method of treatment with few side effects or complications when performed by a qualified professional. Some possible side effects of treatment that are typically short-lived are a temporary worsening of symptoms, fatigue, soreness, bruising, muscle twitching, lightheadedness and emotional release. The risk of infections is minimal as single-use, disposable needles are the practice standard and our clinic maintains a clean environment.

Who can perform acupuncture?

According to the California Acupuncture Board, “acupuncturists who maintain a valid license issued by the Acupuncture Board and physicians licensed by the Medical Board of California. A dentist or podiatrist licensed in California may also practice acupuncture, only within the scope of their respective licenses and if they have completed the necessary training required by their respective licensing board.”

Are acupuncturists required to use sterile, disposable needles?

Yes. It is unprofessional conduct for an acupuncturist to use a needle more than once.

Will you use the same acupuncture points during each session?

Not necessarily since points are selected wholistically based on how you are presenting each time you come in, which can change from treatment to treatment.

What conditions may benefit from acupuncture?

Acupuncture may be used to benefit a variety of health concerns, including but not limited to:

• Body pain and muscle tension, TMJ disorders, headaches and migraines, arthritis, sports injuries

• Parkinson’s disease, stroke, Bell’s palsy

• Allergies, autoimmune disorders, cold/flu symptoms and recovery

• Insomnia, anxiety, depression, stress, addiction

• Menstrual pain and irregularities, male and female infertility

• Gastritis, GERD, IBS.

How many acupuncture treatments will I need and how often?

The number and frequency of treatments needed will vary depending on the nature, severity and duration of your condition. Other factors such as age and compliance with lifestyle, dietary and supplement/herbal recommendations will also have an influence on how quickly and for how long you experience relief. Since the effects of acupuncture are cumulative, consistency is key. Typically, most acute or minor concerns require 3-6 treatments for lasting resolution, whereas more severe or chronic conditions require a minimum of 10 treatments for more lasting relief. If multiple treatments are necessary, your acupuncturist may recommend 1-2 treatments per week in the beginning and then taper the frequency to once or twice a month as you progress in your healing towards maintenance.

What does acupuncture feel like? Does it hurt?

Although everyone has a different level of pain tolerance and overall sensitivity, most people feel little to no discomfort when acupuncture needles are inserted. The needles used are much thinner than those you would normally encounter at a Western medical office. While you may feel a small pinch during insertion, this should quickly dissipate. Some patients report experiencing a slight tingling, dull aching, warming or heavy sensation once the needle reaches the appropriate depth, although many people don’t feel anything at all.

What can I expect after acupuncture treatment?

Everyone has a unique response to acupuncture. Many feel relaxed or euphoric following treatment. You may also experience improved sleep and energy and an overall sense of well-being. Many patients find that their symptoms begin to lessen after the first treatment. Occasionally, patients may experience a temporary worsening of symptoms before they start to feel better or soreness where the needles were inserted. This is a sign that the body’s healing response has been activated. You may also not feel much after treatment as the effects of acupuncture are cumulative and often subtle.

How can microneedling benefit me?

Microneedling creates microchannels in the skin, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin as part of your body’s natural wound-healing process. As a result, it may help rejuvenate the skin, improve the effectiveness of topical products and address many skin-related complaints, including but not limited to:

• fine lines and wrinkles

• scarring

• loose skin

• acne and blackheads

• hair loss

• skin pigmentation issues

• enlarged pores.

How many microneedling treatments will I need?

A series of 4-6 microneedling treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart is generally recommended to achieve an optimal result. However, the number of sessions you will need will ultimately depend on your individual goals and skin condition.

How should I prepare for my microneedling appointment?

Precare instructions will be provided when you call to book your appointment and can also be found on the Patient Information page of our website.
