Cupping
Cupping is a traditional therapy that uses gentle suction to lift the skin and underlying tissues. At Tara Acupuncture & Wellness, treatment is focused on areas of muscle tension, stiffness and discomfort, especially in the back, shoulders and neck.
What Is Cupping?
During cupping, round cups are placed on the skin and suction is created manually or with heat. The cups may remain in one place for several minutes or be moved gently across the skin, depending on the area being treated and the approach used.
Cupping is commonly used to help increase local circulation, ease muscle tension and encourage myofascial release.
Why People Seek Cupping
People may choose cupping for concerns such as:
- Back and shoulder tension
- Neck stiffness
- Muscle soreness
- Tight or overworked muscles
- Recovery after physical activity
- General relaxation
What to Expect During a Cupping Session
Your visit begins with a brief discussion of what you would like to address, where you are feeling tension or discomfort and any relevant health concerns.
Dr. Shah then focuses treatment on the areas that need the most attention. Cupping is often followed by gua sha and a brief massage to further work on areas of tension and help complete the session.
Most people experience a pulling or pressure sensation during treatment. Temporary circular marks may remain after treatment and typically fade over several days.
Standalone Cupping or Combined With Acupuncture
Cupping can be booked as a standalone service or incorporated into an acupuncture treatment when appropriate.
A standalone session may be a good option when the main concern is localized muscle tension or soreness. When combined with acupuncture, cupping can be used as one part of a broader treatment session.
